It’s Page 6 of the Dear Designer blog.
Let’s talk about INTUITIVE DESIGN and why users don’t want to think.
Dear Designer,
One of our core responsibilities is ensuring users don’t need a manual to navigate our designs. But let’s be honest — how often do we design as though users are going to pore over each page, reading our finely crafted text, figuring out how we’ve organized things, and weighing their options before deciding to follow our navigation hierarchy? Every time right 🥹 ? LOL!
Here’s the reality:Most users scan pages, clicking on the first thing that vaguely resembles what they’re looking for. They don’t figure out how things work — they muddle through. Herbert Simon called this SATISFICING: a blend of satisfying and sufficing.
Think about your own experience: Does it matter if you understand how something works, as long as you can use it? It’s not a lack of intelligence — it’s simply a lack of caring. Users want speed, ease, and clarity. So, how can we make life easier for them?
Here are a few intuitive design tactics:
1️⃣ Pre-fill input fields to reduce effort.
2️⃣ Preselect default options to guide decision-making.
3️⃣ Use signifiers (visual cues) and affordances (design elements suggesting function) to lead them effortlessly.
Dear Designer, In today’s fast-paced world, users want what they need in seconds — ideally within 1–3 clicks. Your mission is to deliver that simplicity without compromising functionality 👌 .
