Let’s talk about STAKEHOLDERS!
Dear Designer,
Have you ever conducted usability studies only to discover that you’ve been solving the wrong problem 🤧 ? It’s a tough pill to swallow — especially when stakeholders resist taking a step back because of cost concerns.
This very topic came up during a conversation with a mentor, Ifeoma Amoge Ndukwe, a few weeks ago. That discussion not only gave me clarity but also planted the seed for this blog series. I asked her, “How do I navigate a situation where research reveals a misstep, and the stakeholder is reluctant to invest more?”
Her response stuck with me:“Ask them this: Would you rather spend a little money now or a fortune later to fix the problem?”
That simple yet profound question reframes the entire conversation and reminds stakeholders of the why behind user research — not just to validate, but also to invalidate assumptions and hypotheses.
Here’s the thing: reaching an unexpected conclusion during research isn’t failure — it’s actually progress. It helps you eliminate the wrong paths and refine your approach. But the real challenge often lies in communicating these findings persuasively to stakeholders.
So, Dear Designer, remember: confidence is part of your craft. You know your work and the reasoning behind it better than anyone. The key is learning to frame setbacks as opportunities to course-correct and to confidently articulate the why of your recommendations.
I also want to take a moment to thank Ifeoma Amoge Ndukwe for being such a guiding light in this journey. Your wisdom and mentorship not only shaped this conversation but also inspired me to share my experiences with others through #DearDesigner. Thank you for being the spark that keeps me going!
What strategies have worked for you in managing stakeholder expectations? Let’s exchange ideas in the comments!
